Chewton Glen Hotel & Spa contacted Southern Glass Services regarding the replacement of a dated and worn roof lantern in one of their lounges. This project is part of a series of refurbishments going on throughout the hotel. After speaking with the client one of the main issues they had with the existing glass roof is that the glass was difficult to maintain and clean and the framework was starting to show potential leak points. There was also an issue with excessive sunlight and heat transfer through the glass particularly during the summer months.

We were working in tandem with another company who have the task of replacing the flat roof around the glass roof lantern. From our meetings with both the client and the roofing company it was decided that the roof lantern would be replaced in three stages. Stage one: the removal of the existing glass roof lantern. Stage two: an installation of a temporary weathertight roof. Stage three: removal of the temporary roof and installation of the new glass roof lantern. This plan was devised to ensure that all the works are carried out as efficiently as possible with minimal disruption to the operation of the hotel.

Our team of fitters made quick work of the removal of the existing roof lantern. Having removed and assembled many roof systems ensures that our engineers are able to safely and effectively remove the glass and framework. The old glass and aluminium roof frames were taken back to the Southern Glass Services yard to be disposed of safely. Once the existing roof had been removed our fitters constructed a temporary timber roof on site and installed into the existing roof opening. The timber roof was then made weatherproof to protect the room below from exposure to the rain and wind. This then enabled the roofing company to come in and remove and replace the flat sections of the roof around the roof lantern opening.

Once the flat roof had been replaced our fitters were able to come back to remove the temporary roof and install the new glass roof lantern. Using detailed site surveys, we were able to provide the best design and fit to make the roof opening. We discussed with the client to determine the colour and finish of the roof lantern. We installed solar reflective glass into the roof lantern to help reduce the amount of heat and light entering the room below.
